versace versace - styled by tina

tina, our bombshell from the bushwick store, has a self-confessed penchant for excess when it comes to fashion. today she fesses up with us about her gaudy garb.

where are you from?

i’m from long island. i’m from a really exotic town called babylon (sarcasm).

what do you do beyond being a buyer at beacons?

i’m thinking of either working in rural water supply in west africa or being a doula or midwife. i’m going to take a couple classes in rural water development at hunter college’s geography department and see how that is before i get a nursing degree. i don’t want to jump the gun on any one thing right away. your twenties are your time to try as many things as you can possibly can.

so where does fashion come into it?

in 2009, i got a job working for a stylist during fashion week and ended up staying with him for 6 months. assistant styling is totally crazy! it was fun, though. i saw a lot of crazy rich peoples’ apartments and closets. my boss loved and worked with fur a lot, and i think that’s what sparked my interest in fashion-the glamour of it all. where i come from on long island, the women are super gaudy and wear such crazy shit. something clicked in me and i saw a way to combine the gaudiness with high fashion. I just thought, “yes this is how it should be done.” i’d like to think that i keep a little bit of my long island flavor in me but it’s inspired by this idea of the glamour of fashion.

i thought about doing fashion as a career but i realized i just love dressing myself. it’s like an art form, a way to express your creativity. but as far as doing it professionally, it’s not for me. i watch the shows, i get my inspiration from the italian designers like versace (i’m italian/sicilian) and mostly from the wackadoos that i just see around, like the old men in velour tracksuits and pinky rings.

what’s one of the coolest pieces in your closet?

i have a moschino letterman jacket from my favorite moschino era from the late 80s to early 90s. it’s royal purple silk with yellow felt sleeves, deep red silk lining and moschino patches. on the back says “For your eyes only.” it’s just so good!
