“ghetto until proven fashionable” was greenpoint buyer and brooklyn native jessenia’s mantra for this edition of styled by.
what meaning do clothes have for you?
identity. you can buy the same shirt as your best friend but it’s all about delivery, you’re not gunna wear it the same way. it gives people options and a sense of self.
describe your style...
i like to think of my style as a fusion of formal and casual but essentially comfortable. i used to rock a lot of heels and dresses but i’ve racked up on sneakers as of recent and i find a way to pair them with almost anything.
what inspires your style?
my upbringing, i grew up in brooklyn and being in nyc my whole life allowed me to dress as i pleased. i don’t limit myself to certain brands or styles. i like what i like and i rock it however i feel at that moment.
what was the inspiration behind this shoot?
a quote that read “ghetto until proven fashionable”. everyone wants to adopt trends that in a sense they have no right to. i grew up in the coney island projects and i grew up around timbs, door knockers, baggy pants, du-rags and bubble coats: people wanna rock these things but would never live its reality. i wanted to head back to where our current fashion trends started. give that space its credit.
earliest fashion memory?
in the 8th grade, i was invited to a bat mitzvah and i went shopping for an outfit. i went all out. bought some new shoes, accessories, the whole situation. i showed up to the party and i got so many compliments on my outfit. i continued to wear the same skirt and shirt to school but i would pair it differently every time. i learned how to mix and match my clothes and that’s where it all happened, thanks to julia and caroline’s bat mitzvah.
