André: This is Beacons Closet. Word on the street. My name is Andre. Today we are here with Alycia.
Alycia: Hi. So right now I'm in the middle of redefining myself. I'm learning a lot actually about like very early Asian culture, and I think it's a really good time to help people reconnect with their roots and find the beauty and the strength that's there for them.
André: Is there like certain things that you look for when you go shopping or you just kind of like have no plan to go in there and see what you like?
Alycia: I really love things to have a story. Like a lot of times I like buying things from, from older ladies. Mm-hmm. They'll tell you about the, how much they love, you know, square dancing or Oh, they wore it to prom or their wedding.Yeah. It's like you're carrying on a little bit of the magic from someone else's life. Um, it says a lot about the human spirit. We treasure each other's stories, even if we don't know each other personally.
André: Any stories in your outfits right now?
Alycia: this whole outfit is my deep desire to always feel like I'm wearing pajamas, but kind of get away with it to get it, all of it At Beacon's Closet.
This actually I just got today. Beacon's Closet is wonderful. You know that. My clothes between my friends. Um, they just kind of go around and they go around and then eventually they make it to beacons and sometimes they may get back into the circle. I found out about this kind of jewelry, um, visiting a friend.
We were both very close to being on a plane. That crashed flight that we came in low over the mountains was so beautiful and it really meant that the trip that came after was very deliberate and very spiritual. I made a friend. She's a lonely planet writer. She's amazing. And so being able to just be like halfway up the mountain and purchase old.
Wedding jewelry. Yeah. Um, really got me started on loving, um, pieces and that were built by the people who came from the country. This is one of the problems with people not doing the research before talking about cultural appropriation. I think cultural appropriation is at its worst when a big company like these traditional jewelry turns into a fad and then a year later it's oversaturated.Nobody wants it anymore.
André: Advice for anybody trying to find their own personal style.
Alycia: Listen to yourself. Think we're overly inundated in noise all the time, and you can lose your edges, especially, you know, you have a phone and the second you wake up it want it. It's like making sounds. It wants you to like listen to the news.
It wants to sell you things. It doesn't matter what the style is right now, it doesn't matter what other people think is beautiful. This is what I like. This is what makes me feel special. This is what makes me feel inspired and ready. I wouldn't worry about finding your style. It's really like find yourself and do what makes you happy.
André: Find yourself, find what makes you happy. This is Beacon's Closet. Word on the street with Andre and Alycia. Thank you so much for tuning in.
