Beacon's Word On The Street with Gerald and Peggy
On this week’s Beacon’s Word on the Street, Odera links up with Peggy and Gerald, two style standouts with stories just as cool as their fits. From juggling work, school, and a clothing brand to thrifting gems from Japan, they talk about finding their personal style and making fashion their own.
Odera: Welcome back to Beacon's Word on the street. I'm here with Peggy and Gerald. You guys look so, so, so sick. What do you guys do for work?
Peggy: I am an admin assistant at a college.
Gerald: Student currently, but also own a brand part-time.
Odera: Oh, whatcha studying?
Gerald: Architecture.
Odera: Cool. My mom's an architect. Does what you guys do for work or like what you're studying, uh, translate into your style?
Peggy: Not really. I have to dress pretty conservative and very uptight, so I get to express myself, you know, not at work.
Odera: Right, okay. But you have such a, like strong style, so it must be interesting like having to like live in both worlds.
Peggy: Yeah, I definitely have two wardrobes.
Gerald: Yeah. I would say definitely, it's a creative field, you know, lot of artistic expression, a lot of just like design expression as well.So I think it definitely translates pretty well into all of this. Allowed me to be more, I guess, expressive and more curated with how I put together things.
Odera: How would you describe your style?
Peggy: I definitely take influence from punk. It's more hardcore alternative styles.
Gerald: Definitely being on the kind of streetwear, maybe grunge style, but my style came from just doing a lot of thrifting, so it's kind of mesh of different genres of things that I like and just things that I like to design myself for my clothing brand.
Odera: Tell us a bit more about your brand.
Gerald: Yeah, so this is a recent denim piece that we released that I'm wearing currently. The brand is Goons And Goblins. This is a recent kind of multilayered piece. I love a lot of functional wear, a lot of modular pieces. So a lot of the pieces that we make kind of transform and do all kinds of different things. Another way to express myself outside of just wearing what I like to wear. I do a lot of architecture work, so it kind of translates to designing kind of template format and then we have manufacturers overseas that we work closely with to bring the real thing to life.
Odera: Alright, can you take us through your fits?
Peggy: These were thrifted in Harajuku and these were also Thrifted in Japan. This is Thrifted near D.C. He got me this also in Japan. A bunch of rings. Most of these were gifts. This is chain mail, so I love that.
Gerald: Got some thrifted boots from about a year ago, getting some Goon And Goblins for the bottoms. I got this Harley Davidson jacket it's my first purchase in Japan. Got this Ed Hardy scarf from a friend and some jewelry on my hands. Some vintage Thrifted piece is Comte Draculas, MF Doom ring, Friday, the 13th ring. My birthday's March the 13th, which also happens to be today.
Everyone: Happy birthday!
Gerald: Thank you! And then this ring is from my partner here, hat thrifted as well. But other than that, backpack thrifted. And I've got an assortment of belts here that I kind of keep on me usually, but that's, that's the full fit for today.
Odera: Have any advice for people finding their own personal style?
Peggy: I think it definitely takes a minute. At first you're gonna look a little silly, but it's okay to look silly 'cause you're gonna look cool in a minute.
Gerald: Go to small shops and thrift as much as you can, vintage stores, whatever that kind of like gets you in the space where you're seeing things you don't normally see or kinda interacting with garments that you don't normally interact with. I think it will help you build a larger palette for what you think you know can be your style and then you kind of distill as you go on there. So it'll take some time, but I think that is like the tried and true best method to find your own unique style.
Odera: Thank you so much you guys. Thanks for joining us!
