Fashion In Motion with Pao Lago

When it comes to street style and fashion week moments, Pao Lago has that rare eye that makes every shot feel effortless — like you’re right there in the crowd with him. From shooting friends on the fly to capturing the chaos (and magic) of NYFW, Pao’s photos are all about authenticity and vibe. We caught up with him to talk about his roots in the Philippines, how his style’s evolved, and the wild moments that come with being behind the lens.

You’ve got such a cool eye for fashion—where did that spark come from? Was photography your first love, or did fashion pull you in first and the camera followed?

Pao: I’ve always been into both, but not really together at first. Back in the Philippines, I was already into photography. I even took photos for our school publication in high school. Fashion was something I liked too, but we didn’t really have the money or resources to buy whatever I wanted. I was on Tumblr a lot back then though, so I was still keeping up with trends mostly streetwear stuff. I remember being into Janoskis, Nike dunks, Obey, Stüssy, a little bit of Supreme that whole Filipino/swaggapino era.

Your shots always feel so real—like you just happened to catch people right in their element. What do you love most about capturing those spontaneous fashion moments, and how do you know when that’s the shot?

Pao: Honestly, I just love documenting outfits that are either really well put together or loud and different. I can appreciate a basic fit, but it usually doesn’t catch my interest. If you look at my photos, most of the outfits people are wearing are either unique or have that pop that instantly catches your eye. It’s kind of hard to explain how I pick my subjects the outfits just draw me in, I guess.

You’ve shot in New York Fashion Week which could get chaotic. What’s it like shooting in that environment? How do you balance capturing the chaos + glamour, while staying true to your own vision?

Pao: It really is chaotic, but you learn to love it. A lot of running around and standing all day but it really is the best especially when you’re around friends. It feels like a reunion every season because most of my friends I only get to see during fashion week since everyone’s busy, but during that time we get to hang out all day.

You’re always surrounded by so much style—what about your own? How would you describe your personal fashion vibe when you’re behind the camera or just out and about? Has your style changed since you started shooting fashion?

Pao: I’d say my style is pretty much all over the place, but it’s definitely changed a lot since I moved to the U.S. I’d say streetwear was my gateway into fashion, like most people, the deeper dig into it, the more you start discovering different styles and influences and that’s how your style evolves. That’s how my style has evolved.

Growing up in the Philippines, how has your background shaped the way you see and capture fashion? Do you notice any Filipino influences sneaking into your work?

Since fashion can get intense, what are some of the funniest or most unexpected things you’ve seen behind the lens—on the runway, backstage, or on the street? Any favorite or interesting interactions?

Pao: There’s always a ton of interesting stuff that happens during fashion week, protests, fights, dedicated fans waiting for hours, and so much more. But my favorite interaction was with Sam Smith. After I posted their photo, Sam actually reached out to me via DM and said they’d love to have me photograph them before a show. I couldn’t believe it until it actually happened. It was one of those real “pinch me” moments.
